About Tamar Samir

Tamar Samir is an Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga Teacher based in NYC. She teaches a strong vinyasa flow in the Jivamukti tradition. Her classes have been called meditative, calming, thoughtful, and uplifting.

Tamar was born in Michigan, but grew up in Israel, with the dual cultural influences of an Israeli father and Scottish mother. She moved to NYC in 1997 and began to practice at Jivamukti Yoga School in 2001. Tamar was drawn to the creativity of the Jivamukti Yoga method and to the unequivocal association of animal rights with yoga practice. This compassionate philosophy continues to inspire her.

In addition to teaching yoga, Tamar is a graphic designer. She was a Creative Director at Nickelodeon and currently teaches at Parsons, the New School for Design. No stranger to the corporate world, her yoga practice has evolved, deepened, and empowered her in stressful times. Her teachers have inspired her to teach yoga as a way to spread happiness and freedom to all.

Tamar has been blessed with the opportunity to study directly with Jivamukti Yoga founders Sharon Gannon and David Life, and Advanced Certified Jivamukti Yoga teacher Narayani (Nicole Nichols). She also studies Sanskrit with Manorama (Thea D’Alvia) and Bhagavad Gita with Yogesvara Das (Joshua M. Greene).

Tamar is passionate about animal rights and sustainability, as an expression of ahimsa, the yogic principle of non-harming. In January 2011, Tamar completed the No Impact Project’s first Eco-Leader training with Colin Beavan, aka No Impact Man. Through her association with The No Impact Project, Tamar leads No Impact Weeks, weeklong ‘carbon cleanse’ programs that empower citizens to make choices which better their lives and lower their environmental impact.

In 2010, Tamar co-founded Nava NYC, a collective of 9 yoga teachers bringing yoga and meditation to the workplace.

When not in NYC, Tamar travels and teaches in Europe and Israel, as well as around the US.
